About In honor of Mary Beth Norris

Mary Beth Norris, founder of the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra and beloved member of the Steamboat Springs community, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Mary Beth’s vision, passion, and deep love for music planted the seeds for what has become your Steamboat Symphony Orchestra. What began as a grassroots gathering of local musicians has grown into a thriving orchestra and music education organization serving the Yampa Valley.

Her support of the SSO remained active and unwavering. Mary Beth was present at concerts, events, and programs, always cheering on the organization she helped create. Alongside her husband, Mark Fischer, our current Board Chair, Mary Beth’s presence, encouragement, and deep love for this orchestra are forever woven into the fabric of the SSO.
